He’s a musician who represents more than the notes he plays; he stands for the late ’60s, but also for a generous and open way of expressing and sharing music.
—New York Times
Pharoah Sanders remains a formidable presence with a spiritual vibe . . . one of the last, surviving links to what was a golden era of jazz creativity.
—St. Paul Pioneer Press
Pharoah Sanders possesses one of the most distinctive tenor sounds in jazz. Named an NEA Jazz Master, Sanders is a legendary jazz saxophonist who has shown a remarkable facility performing in a variety of styles—from free to mainstream—displaying what has been called “hard-edged lyricism.” Although he made his name with expressionistic, nearly anarchic free jazz in John Coltrane’s late ensembles of the mid-’60s, Sanders’s later music is more graceful and melodic, still infused with his big, rich tenor sound. Sanders’s saxophone sound is unforgettable—deep, raw, humming with overtones, and laden with fervent feeling and serene beauty.
