DeVotchKa infuses modern indie music with a global flavor drawn from numerous influences, including cabaret, spaghetti Western films, norteño, punk, and the immigrant dance music of Eastern Europe. Its eclectic palette is built on diverse instrumentation, which includes guitar, trumpet, violin, accordion, double bass, sousaphone, and percussion.
The Colorado quartet was a success in the mid-2000s thanks to its Grammy-nominated soundtrack to the hit indie film Little Miss Sunshine and its 2008 album A Mad and Faithful Telling, which reached number nine on Billboard’s Heatseekers chart. Front man Nick Urata also composes film and television scores, and that widescreen approach is applied to DeVotchKa’s music, which unfolds slowly into grandiose moments.
