Billy Cobham’s supremely influential career cannot be easily encapsulated. He is widely considered fusion’s greatest drummer, and his explosive technique powered some of the genre’s most important early recordings—including groundbreaking efforts by Miles Davis and the Mahavishnu Orchestra—before he became an accomplished bandleader. He pioneered an ultra-aggressive and virtuosic double-bass drumming style, and his experiments with techniques and the way drum kits are set up changed the way people play music.

Although there are many all-time greats, Cobham is one of the few truly pivotal drummers. In 2001, Cobham was named one of the 25 Most Influential Drummers by Modern Drummer, and his influence on the drums, drumming, and drummers crosses genres and is as strong today as ever.
