To say that Stanley Jordan turned jazz guitar upside down when he came to prominence in the mid-1980s is almost a literal truth.
To see and hear Stanley Jordan play guitar is to witness higher-level instrumental performance.
During his four-decade career, guitar virtuoso Stanley Jordan has raised the bar for excellence and consistently displayed a musical persona marked by openness, imagination, versatility, and daring.
Jordan made a splash in jazz circles in the mid-1980s thanks to his impressive technique, called “touch tapping”: he strikes the fretboard of his guitar with both hands, giving him access to extended melodic possibilities. (He occasionally plays two guitars at once, and sometimes a guitar and piano at the same time.) But his impressive technique is always a means to a musical end, and his fluid, multilayered textures are imbued with great warmth and sensitivity.
