The past and promise of American music.

New Orleans has long been the point at which sounds and cultures from around the world converge, mingle, and resurface, transformed by the Crescent City’s inimitable spirit and joie de vivre. No band embodies that idea more vividly than the Preservation Hall Jazz Band, which has held aloft the torch for the music of New Orleans for more than 50 years and carried it enthusiastically forward as a reminder that the history the group was founded to preserve is a vibrantly living one.
At the band’s beginning, the Preservation Hall Jazz Band broke racial boundaries to present the living legends of New Orleans music, who were themselves living links to the origins of jazz. Today, with a band whose members’ ages range nearly 60 years, the group’s mission remains the same: to pass on the jazz traditions of New Orleans while revitalizing them with new blood and fresh ideas.
