He plays fearless and it’s intoxicating to play with him because he makes you play fearless. It’s wicked to see how much music he pulls out of a bow. He’s untouchable.
—Vince Gill
Although he is only in his early 40s, Grammy winner Michael Cleveland has a lifetime of accolades to his credit. Cleveland picked up the fiddle at age 4; by the time he was 9, he was sitting in with the legendary Bill Monroe at the Bean Blossom Bluegrass Festival. He brought his virtuosic style to the Grand Ole Opry as a guest of Alison Krauss soon after, and he was handpicked for the International Bluegrass Music Association’s Bluegrass Youth All-Stars before he was 14. His blistering prowess and technical fluency have made him an in-demand musician, and he has performed with the likes of Vince Gill, Marty Stuart, Tim O’Brien, J. D. Crowe and the New South, Andy Statman, and the Kruger Brothers in recent years. Cleveland formed his own band, Flamekeeper, in 2006 and hasn’t rested since, constantly looking for new ways to push himself and his music forward.
His sixth solo album, 2023’s Grammy-nominated Lovin’ of the Game, showcases Cleveland’s inclusive musical nature, placing value in the process over the output. It is the sublime sound of artists working together in the act of creation without regard for any preconceived notion of what “should” be—the sound of genuine musicianship.
