On alto saxophone, his main instrument, he has an attractively mellow sound, rooted in soul and gospel and sharpened with just a hint of metallic tang.

Gerald Albright’s musical muse has taken him to so many places in contemporary R&B and urban jazz that he defies easy categorization.
Playing both saxophone and bass, Albright was the consummate session and touring musician in the ’80s, working with such artists as Anita Baker, Atlantic Starr, The Temptations, Maurice White, the Winans, and Whitney Houston. He launched his solo saxophone career in the 1980s and has been a core part of the smooth jazz genre. In the late ’90s, he led a big band for and toured with pop star Phil Collins, and he released a record of romantic ballads with R&B singer Will Downing called Pleasures of the Night.
Between two Grammy-nominated solo albums, 2010’s Pushing the Envelope and 2014’s Slam Dunk, Albright appeared on two collaborative hits nominated for Best Pop Instrumental Album Grammy Awards: 24/7, with guitarist Norman Brown; and Dave Koz and Friends’ Summer Horns.
