Paul McDermand began his musical career as a freelance percussionist in the Chicago area. In 1981, he moved to Phoenix, where he contributed to film scores, commercial jingles, symphonic productions, and stage shows. After performing with the rhythm section of a revival tour of Andrew Lloyd Webber’s Jesus Christ Superstar, McDermand returned to Scottsdale, where he developed an assortment of exotic and easygoing instrumental arrangements built around the steel drums and marimba.
Enhanced by tasteful orchestration, McDermand’s joyful, lilting steel drums and smooth, rich vibraphone arouse, inspire, and carry listeners on sweeping instrumental excursions. Whether enjoying the Latin fire of “Caravan” or the serene beauty of “A Summer Place” (with a surf medley and three-part vocal harmonies tossed in for good measure), audiences embrace each destination as McDermand’s ensemble gives the broad expanse of popular music an island twist.
