Concert Details

Few musicians have played a more influential role in the history of funk than legendary trombonist, bandleader, and composer Fred Wesley. Best known for his groundbreaking work with James Brown and Parliament-Funkadelic, Wesley helped define the unmistakable sound of funk with his powerful horn arrangements, infectious grooves, and masterful musicianship.

As a key member and musical director of James Brown’s band, Wesley contributed to some of funk’s most iconic recordings, including “Hot Pants,” “The Payback,” and “Papa Don’t Take No Mess.” He later joined George Clinton’s Parliament-Funkadelic collective, further cementing his place among the architects of modern funk. His remarkable career has also included collaborations with Count Basie, Ray Charles, and many other legendary musicians.

Wesley’s distinctive trombone playing and innovative arrangements have influenced generations of musicians across funk, jazz, soul, and hip hop. Now leading his own powerhouse ensemble, Wesley continues to deliver the deep grooves, explosive horn lines, and irresistible rhythms that made him one of funk’s true pioneers.

“A legendary R&B, soul, and funk veteran whose musical career spans five decades.”
