Fall 2026 Museum Guide Training Application

Event Details

Volunteer museum guides are passionate lifelong learners who provide guided tours for school and youth groups. You don’t need a musical background to apply—training covers everything a guide needs to know.

If you have questions, email volunteer@MIM.org or visit our volunteer team member webpage to see our available volunteer opportunities and learn more about becoming a MIM volunteer team member.

Programming is subject to change.

How to Apply

Step 1

Apply now! Submit your application by Friday, September 25.

Step 2

Complete an orientation for new volunteers and a meet and greet for museum guide candidates.

Step 3

Complete a five-and-a-half-week training program. Classes meet Mondays and Thursdays, October 8–November 12, from 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Museum guide training kicks off with an introduction to MIM’s educational programs and a behind-the-scenes tour. The next five weeks balance talks by MIM staff members (including training lectures from our curators), walkthroughs of our field trip formats, and time to practice and receive feedback and ideas from staff and museum guide mentors. Trainees will also shadow and co-lead school tours during the training program.

Step 4

Lead fun, engaging tours of MIM’s galleries for kids of all ages.

“I would encourage anyone who enjoys sharing the world’s music to become a museum guide. The class is very organized, the curriculum is relevant, and no time is wasted in getting into the galleries. The teachers are excellent leaders, and having the opportunity to spend quality time with the curators is a treat! The mentor guides are personable and helpful. Friendships with your other classmates really make you understand you are part of a terrific team.”
