The MusicaNova Orchestra is a professional ensemble that features new music, unjustly neglected pieces, and fresh interpretations of the classics.
Dead White Man Music is a modern harpsichord concerto in which African American composer Evan Williams, quoting Bach and Nina Simone, Dowland and Julius Eastman, post-minimalism and rock, asks, “What music am I called to write, and who should be my models?”
The rest of the concert is the antithesis of the traditional classical canon. Hindemith was an anti-establishment figure who challenged the status quo and ultimately had to flee the Nazis. Coleman’s Freedmen honors the legacy of Native Americans and former African slaves who traversed the Trail of Tears. And Cuban-born Pulitzer Prize winner León’s Permutation Seven incorporates popular dance forms, jazz, and Afro-Cuban rhythms.
“MusicaNova Orchestra has a reputation for its truly remarkable programming. You will find music performed there that you won’t encounter anywhere else.”
Ross Amico, WWFM
