If a great writer is a poet, and a great poet is a genius, then Smokey Robinson is a miracle.
—Diana Ross
Smokey is my hero. When we met, he didn’t realize he was my hero. I had never met anyone up close and famous . . . had never in my life met a black poet. He talked to us and encouraged us. What you feel about Berry, Smokey, I feel about you. I love you man, and thank you for being exactly who you are in my life.
—Lionel Richie
Once pronounced by Bob Dylan as America’s “greatest living poet,” beloved icon and acclaimed singer-songwriter Smokey Robinson’s career spans more than four decades of hits. He has received numerous awards, including the Grammy Living Legend Award, NARAS Lifetime Achievement Award, an honorary doctorate from Howard University, Kennedy Center Honors, and the National Medal of Arts from the president of the United States. He has also been inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame and the Songwriters Hall of Fame.
Robinson founded the Miracles, and his hits with the group include “You’ve Really Got a Hold on Me,” “Ooo Baby Baby,” “The Tracks of My Tears,” “Going to a Go-Go,” and “More Love.” In addition to writing hits for the Miracles, Robinson wrote and produced hits for other Motown greats: the Temptations, Mary Wells, Brenda Holloway, and Marvin Gaye, among others. “The Way You Do the Things You Do,” “My Girl,” “Get Ready,” “You Beat Me to the Punch,” “Don’t Mess with Bill,” “Ain’t That Peculiar,” and “My Guy” are just a few of his songwriting triumphs during those years. 2025 marked the 50th anniversary of Robinson’s 1975 breakthrough album, A Quiet Storm, and he continues to thrill audiences around the world.
