Concert Details
The legendary Nick Lowe is an artist of many talents. He’s a songwriter who deftly balances humor and emotion, an influential producer, and a vocalist of almost surprising grace and charm. He pioneered pub rock and was a pivotal figure in the early days of punk. But in his current second act, a silver-haired and tender-hearted but sharp-tongued singer-songwriter, he has no equal, turning out a fantastic string of albums starting with 1995’s The Impossible Bird.
The Cactus Blossoms sound uncannily like a sibling harmony act, brothers Page Burkum and Jack Torrey’s voices weaving together in a way that suggests a modern-day version of the Everly Brothers or the Louvin Brothers. One Day, the duo’s latest album, explores the tension between optimism and despair and examines the power of positive thinking in the face of chaos and uncertainty. Its songs are tender and timeless, with straightforward arrangements centered around the brothers’ airtight harmonies, delivered with a soulful, 1970s-inspired palette of playful Wurlitzer organ, breezy guitars, and muscular percussion.
Nick Lowe:
“Lowe, with just an acoustic guitar and a sackful of history, is mesmerizing, a rockabilly rebel with tinges of gospel, country, and soul.”
Mojo
Cactus Blossoms:
“Rock-solid, freak-of-genetics harmonies.”
