A beautiful amalgamation of all of its members’ styles and influences . . . a dreamy-yet-pointed blend of song and sound.
—American Songwriter
Drink the Sea began in 2022. Taking their name from a lyric that Duke Garwood (Mark Lanegan Band) wrote, the albums are produced and mixed by Barrett Martin (Screaming Trees, Mad Season) and Alain Johannes (Eleven, Queens of the Stone Age) and reflect vast experience of the band’s members—Garwood, Martin, and Johannes, along with Peter Buck (R.E.M.) and Abbey Blackwell—as songwriters, arrangers, and singers. It also shows a strong influence of music from around the world, because although the songs are built around traditional guitar, bass, and drums configurations, they also shimmer with the sounds of the vibraphone and marimba, the Arabic oud, the Indian sitār, gongs and bells from the Indonesian gamelan orchestra, and various percussion instruments such as the Brazilian surdo drum and the kalimba.
The band draws from its first two albums as well as the classics from the catalogs of its members’ former bands. Award-winning PBS filmmaker Tad Fetting projects his original films, synchronized to the setlist.
