SUMMARY:Dengue Fever
DESCRIPTION:Formed in Los Angeles in 2001\, Dengue Fever traces its roots to organist Ethan Holtzman’s 1997 trip to Cambodia\, during which a friend contracted the mosquito-borne tropical disease that gave the band its name. That trip also introduced Holtzman to the sound of ’60s-era Cambodian rock\, which still dominated radios and jukeboxes around the country. The sound bore a strong resemblance to Nuggets-style garage rock and psychedelia\, heavy on the organ and fuzztone guitar\, and with the danceable beat of classic rock and roll. It also bore the unmistakable stamp of Bollywood film musicals and the heavily reverbed guitar lines of surf and spy soundtrack music. \nMore than two decades later\, Dengue Fever still blends several different cultures and styles into an indie-rock melting pot. Its beguiling songs are sung in the Khmer language by Chhom Nimol\, a one-time pop star in Cambodia who came from a highly successful musical family had performed several times for the Cambodian royal family before immigrating to Los Angeles.

SUMMARY:Eric Ramsey\, Hans Olson\, and Chuck Hall
DESCRIPTION:Eric Ramsey has been active in the Arizona music scene since the mid-1970s\, performing solo and in many bands. Using soaring vocals and organic arrangements\, Ramsey writes from experience about the human condition—at times sensitive\, at times humorous\, and always thought-provoking. His arrangements and delivery encompass a spectrum of styles\, from delicate fingerpicking to raucous\, bluesy bottleneck slide. \nHans Olson has been a fixture on the Arizona music scene for more than 50 years. He fronted many bands in the 1960s and ’70s but now performs as a solo act. He has released more than 17 albums and toured extensively in the United States\, Canada\, and Europe. Though he is a prolific songwriter and proficient in many styles of music\, Olson is mostly known as a blues musician. He plays an amplified acoustic guitar and a harmonica in a neck rack and is considered one of the best “harp in a rack” players in the world. \nChuck Hall has won the hearts and accolades of fans and critics throughout his electrifying blues career. His Arizona journey began in 1984\, when he joined Texas Red and the Hartbreakers. He made his name in the Valley blues scene with the legendary powerhouse trio Chuck Hall and the Brick Wall\, and he currently performs with the Chuck Hall Band. He spent a year on the road with Robert Cray and has opened for B. B. King\, Johnny Winter\, Gregg Allman\, Charlie Musselwhite\, Los Lobos\, and many more. In 2014\, PBS and the Tempe Center for the Arts highlighted Hall’s career in a televised Songwriters Showcase.

SUMMARY:Django Festival Allstars
DESCRIPTION:Django Reinhardt’s unmistakable cool and jumping joie de vivre made him an icon for a list of luminaries\, including guitar greats Carlos Santana and Eric Clapton. Jimi Hendrix named his Band of Gypsys trio in tribute to Reinhardt\, and Willie Nelson adopted Reinhardt’s influence in playing country swing. \nThe star musicians of the Django Festival Allstars have grown into a brilliantly cohesive group and have received standing ovations at top concert halls and festivals. The group’s music transports listeners to Paris in the 1920s and ’30s\, when Django was king and gitane music filled the air. The Django Festival Allstars bring Reinhardt’s music into the 21st century\, honoring traditions and standards while adding their own interpretations\, arrangements\, and original compositions. \nSamson Schmitt—lead guitar\nLudovic Beier—accordion and accordina\nPierre Blanchard—violin\nAntonio Licusati—bass\nFrancko Mehrstein—rhythm guitar

SUMMARY:Fantastic Negrito
DESCRIPTION:Born Xavier Amin Dphrepaulezz\, Fantastic Negrito has pioneered his own blues\, hip hop\, rock\, folk\, and funk hybrid. His unique story is a testament to resilience and the transformative power of music. He grew up in an orthodox Muslim household\, signed a doomed major-label deal in the 1990s\, and survived near-fatal car crash that permanently damaged his guitar-playing hand in 2000. He returned to performing after his son was born\, and in 2015\, he won the first NPR Tiny Desk Contest. He has since earned three Grammys for Best Contemporary Blues Album and shared stages with Sturgill Simpson\, Chris Cornell\, and Bruce Springsteen and headlined world tours and performed at festivals such as Lollapalooza\, Glastonbury\, and Newport Folk. \nHis most recent album\, 2024’s Son of a Broken Man\, sees Fantastic Negrito encapsulating his inimitable style with the unexpected twists that have become his trademark. Filled with hard-hitting guitar riffs and expressive ballads in equal measure\, it stands as one of his most personal works to date\, exploring family\, deception\, and the human desire to hide the true self.

SUMMARY:Simon Phillips and Protocol 6
DESCRIPTION:Simon Phillips is one of the world’s most renowned and respected drummers. His style reflects not only his technical gift but also his distinct musical sensibility. Whether he is playing rock\, fusion\, or jazz\, Phillips applies the same precision and intensity to his drumming\, which is never lacking in emotion and feel. \nThroughout the 1970s and ’80s\, Phillips worked with rock bands and artists including Jeff Beck\, Judas Priest\, and the Who. Following Jeff Porcaro’s death in 1992\, he joined Toto. After leaving the group in 2014\, Phillips ventured into fusion and progressive rock as a drummer and producer. His long-running fusion project Protocol releases Protocol 6 in June. The group currently features keyboardist Otmaro Ruiz\, guitarist Alexander Sill\, saxophonist Phillip Whack\, and bassist Ernest Tibbs.

SUMMARY:The Steel Wheels
DESCRIPTION:The Steel Wheels have long been at home in the creative space between tradition and innovation\, informed by the familiar sounds of Virginia’s Blue Ridge Mountains\, where the band was formed\, but always moving forward with insightful lyrics and an evolving sound. Jay Lapp (vocals\, guitars\, mandolin)\, Eric Brubaker (vocals\, fiddle)\, and Trent Wagler (lead vocals\, guitar\, banjo) formed the group in 2005; the trio released several albums under Wagler’s name before officially adopting the Steel Wheels moniker in 2010. Kevin Garcia (drums\, percussion\, keys) joined in 2017\, bringing a new level of sonic depth and polish to the outfit. Newest member Jeremy Darrow rounds out the rhythm section and grounds the band\, which explores deeply rooted yet fresh folk-rock sounds.
