SUMMARY:Mavis Staples
DESCRIPTION:Now 86\, Mavis Staples has been performing since she was 8 years old. She started out more than 70 years ago in the Staple Singers with her father Roebuck “Pops” Staples\, sisters Cleotha and Yvonne\, and brother Pervis; she is the lone surviving member of the group\, still carrying her family’s gifts and knowledge with her as a living heritage. \nAs an inductee into the Blues\, Rock and Roll\, and Gospel Music Halls of Fame\, a Kennedy Center Honoree\, and a winner of multiple Grammys (including a Lifetime Achievement Award)\, Staples is a pillar of musical history. She has collaborated with nearly every major figure of her era\, including Bob Dylan\, Prince\, Aretha Franklin\, Willie Nelson\, and countless stars from subsequent generations. \nSad and Beautiful World is the latest solo album from this national treasure and multigenerational talent. The record spans seven decades of the American Songbook—a range nearly as vast as Staples’s career—and includes reinventions of timeless songs as well as original music.

SUMMARY:Joey Alexander
DESCRIPTION:A native of Bali\, Joey Alexander taught himself to play piano by listening to the classic jazz albums his father shared with him. Alexander’s father\, who was an amateur musician\, soon recognized his son’s gift for jazz\, as Alexander’s technique and ability to grasp complicated musical concepts were beyond his years. From there\, Alexander’s musical intuition flourished\, as did his love of playing jazz. In recognition of his talent\, UNESCO invited Alexander\, then 8 years old\, to play for Herbie Hancock\, who provided early support to Alexander’s budding career. \nThe world has since taken notice. At age 9\, Alexander took the grand prize in the first international festival jazz improvisation contest in Odessa\, Ukraine. He has been featured at festivals worldwide\, including Jakarta’s International Java Jazz Festival and the Copenhagen Jazz Festival\, and he has performed in gala concerts for Jazz at Lincoln Center and the Jazz Foundation of America.

SUMMARY:Naturally 7
DESCRIPTION:“A cappella group” so vastly underplays the jaw-dropping audio pyrotechnics that Naturally 7 creates onstage that the group had to coin a phrase—“vocal play”—to accurately depict what it does. \nNaturally 7 is more than a tightly orchestrated collection of great singers. The group transforms each member’s voice into a human instrument\, effortlessly producing music of any genre. Its vocal choreography is perfectly interwoven\, and its sonic mastery was on full display in a series of unforgettable performances on the talent competition series The World’s Best\, during which Naturally 7 won the Group Music category and cemented its singular status among the planet’s musical elite. \nThis was only the icing on the cake of a still-vibrant 20-year career that includes three world tours with Michael Bublé and a sold-out shared billing with global phenomenon Coldplay at the Barclays Center.
