Playing for Change elevates musicians and music education.
—PBS
It’s world music with a street vibe and a heart of gold, brought to life in a pastiche of performances by musicians from places like Ghana, the Netherlands and New Orleans—each recorded in his or her own environment.

As part of MIM’s 10th Anniversary in 2020, MIM’s Music Theater will present the Global Masters Series, which celebrates the creativity and musicianship of artists at the pinnacle of their craft. Each performance brings a unique perspective to the question of why music matters, helping us understand the deep connections we all have to music.
Producer Mark Johnson created Playing for Change in 2002 to inspire and change the world through music. The project began with recording street musicians from around the world who were literally playing for change. The video they created of the song “Stand By Me,” with a seamless range of voices trading verses in the iconic song, became a YouTube sensation and led to an award-winning documentary.
The touring band features musicians from all over the world. They will perform evening concerts at MIM Music Theater and participate in a variety of events during the day.
