With each release, her talents—keen songwriter, deft melodysmith, butterfly wing-fingered guitarist—continued to reveal themselves so steadily as to have a lulling effect, like waves hitting some shoreline where it’s always high tide.
It’s not just the lyrics that are really strong. The bare bones of the songs—Marling’s vocal melodies and acoustic guitar picking—are uniformly great, the arrangements subtly inventive.
Laura Marling is a Grammy- and Mercury Prize-nominated British folk singer-songwriter. Marling recorded her first album, Alas, I Cannot Swim, in 2008 when she was just 17 years old. Marling’s 2017 release, Semper Femina, earned a Grammy nomination for Best Folk Album.
