Pop-Up Demonstration: Robjohn Pipe Organ 9:30 a.m. and 1:00 p.m. Orientation Gallery Enjoy a 15-minute demonstration of MIM’s new 14-foot-tall pipe organ, made in 1859, the only surviving instrument of New York City builder Thomas Robjohn.
Performance: 9 Dragons Lion Dance Team 10:00 a.m. and 11:45 a.m. Main Courtyard Begin the day with a 20-minute Chinese lion dance led by the 9 Dragons Lion Dance Team. This traditional dance has been performed for centuries to provide entertainment, protection, and good fortune.
Congo Masks and Music Mini Gallery Talk 10:45 a.m., 12:30 and 2:15 p.m. Target Gallery Included with special exhibition admission only. Explore the music and art of the Congo with Manuel Jordán, PhD, MIM’s deputy director and chief curator, or Katie Palmer, DMA, curator of education, in this brief insider’s look at the curation of the exhibition’s rare and special collection of masks and musical instruments.
Drum Circle: AZ Rhythm Connection 11:00 a.m. and 2:30 p.m. Founders Room Catch the rhythm and learn the basics of African, Latin, and pop-music hand drumming with master instructor Frank Thompson. Each session will last 30 minutes, and drums will be sanitized before and after use.
Mexican Folklore Performance: Ollin Yoliztli Dance Academy 1:30 and 3:15 p.m. Main Courtyard Take a 30-minute tour through Mexico with Ollin Yoliztli Dance Academy’s baile folklórico (folklore dance) showcasing a variety of regional dance styles.
