Booker T. Jones is one of the legends of soul music.
—The New Yorker
Jones’ name is synonymous with the Hammond B3 organ. At 17, he recorded the instrument’s anthem, “Green Onions.
Booker T. will forever be known as the Booker T. from Booker T. and the MGs. But this book reveals so much more of the man.
As part of MIM’s 10th Anniversary in 2020, MIM’s Music Theater will present the Global Masters Series, which celebrates the creativity and musicianship of artists at the pinnacle of their craft. Each performance brings a unique perspective to the question of why music matters, helping us understand the deep connections we all have to music.
Musical legend Booker T. Jones celebrates his life’s journey with a reading from his memoir Time Is Tight and an unforgettable performance.
Booker T. Jones is a Rock and Roll Hall of Fame inductee, winner of four Grammy Awards, recipient of a Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award, and arguably the most famous Hammond B3 player in history. As leader of the legendary Booker T. and the MGs, this pillar of soul music collaborated with Otis Redding, Albert King, and more during his tenure at Stax Records. Since then, Jones has lent his trademark keyboard chops to and produced classic albums such as Willie Nelson’s multiplatinum hit Stardust and Bill Withers’s Just As I Am, featuring the hit song “Ain’t No Sunshine.” Both Jones’s 2009 solo release Potato Hole and his 2011 solo release The Road from Memphis won Grammy Awards for Best Pop Instrumental Album. In 2013, he released Sound the Alarm, marking a return to Stax Records after forty years.
Prior to the musical performance, Jones will treat fans to an intimate reading from his forthcoming autobiography Time Is Tight, followed by a short Q&A opportunity. In an emotional musical journey, Jones will then perform the songs that make up the fabric of his musical identity. Booker T. and the MGs’ staples, such as “Green Onions,” are woven into defining moments from his journey after Stax, when he produced and recorded with artists as diverse as Bill Withers, Willie Nelson, and Carlos Santana. The evening culminates with new original music, highlighting the soaring guitar and vocals of his son and collaborator Teddy Jones. After the show, Booker T. will greet fans and sign copies of Time Is Tight.

“The Stax studio wizard and acclaimed producer tells his own story and finds his voice. . . . The result emphasizes not only his Memphis roots and role in Stax’s reinvention of R&B but his second act here in Los Angeles—as a wide-ranging session man and producer who remains, in his eighth decade, a sought-after sonic guru.”—New York Times
