Musical Instrument Museum Recognized as One of the Nation’s Top Museums for Families

Galleries, Activities and Events Make MIM a Must-See Destination

PHOENIX (Feb. 19, 2014) − The Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) in Phoenix has been named number four in a national list of the best museums for families, it was announced today. The competition to determine the ranking was held by 10Best, a division of USA Today Travel.

MIM competed against 19 other nominees selected by a panel of travel experts in a fierce round of online, public voting that determined the final list of 10 best museums. MIM was the only Arizona museum selected to participate in the contest.

Preceding MIM in the top spots are the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis, which captured the number one position, followed by the Children’s Museum of Houston and the New Mexico Museum of Natural History and Science in Albuquerque. The complete list of winners is available at http://www.10best.com/awards/travel/bestmuseum-for-families/. MIM’s gallery exhibits feature immersive sight-and-sound experiences that engage museum guests of all ages.
In addition, MIM’s family-friendly offerings include:

  • Special events such as the Saturday, Feb. 22 “Science of Sound” Family Day, which will feature a range of science, technology, engineering, arts and math-based programs including hands-on sound experiments, a demonstration of the giant octobasse and tours of MIM’s Conservation Lab.
  • The Experience Gallery where museum guests of all ages are able to see, touch and play numerous instruments from around the world, ranging from a Burmese harp to a giant Indonesian gong.
  • Age-specific courses such as the MIMkids Mini Music Makers and the Musical Adventures Series that explore music in other cultures and on other continents.

The Musical Instrument Museum is located at 4725 E. Mayo Boulevard in Phoenix (corner of Tatum and Mayo Boulevards, just south of Loop 101). For general museum information and a full schedule of events, visit MIM.org or call 480.478.6000.
