PHOENIX (July 18, 2012) The Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) is proud to announce the release of its first museum catalog, “MIM: Highlights from the Musical Instrument Museum.” The catalog is 216 pages and showcases beautiful photographs and extensive descriptions of more than 200 of the museum’s instruments, as well as the award-winning museum itself.
The idea for a catalog originated because many of the museum’s guests wanted a memento in which they could learn more about MIM after their visit. The book uniquely highlights instruments and facts that may not be on display in the galleries. This allows visitors to continue learning about the museum’s instruments, and the cultures in which they are made and performed, from the comfort of their homes. The team that assembled the catalog wanted to make it just like MIM: educational, yet engaging and fun; this way, children and adults alike can enjoy what the book has to offer.
The catalog begins with a foreword by MIM’s founding president and director, Dr. Bill DeWalt, and is divided into 11 chapters, including an overview of the museum and a look at each of the museum’s Geographical Galleries. The introduction to each chapter is written by MIM’s curators, who explain the hallmarks of these areas from a musical perspective.
“Many of our guests have been asking for a catalog about MIM to help them remember their experience and to help them describe this unique, world-class museum to their friends. We have worked hard to produce a catalog that fully represents all of the dimensions of MIM,” said DeWalt. “The MIM experience centers on immersing our guests in the sights and sounds of the music of the world and we tried to do the same with this book.”
“MIM: Highlights from the Musical Instrument Museum” is available in the Museum Store for a retail price of $40. The catalog can also be purchased by e-mailing museumstore@theMIM.org or by calling 480.478.6002. Shipping is available for an additional fee.
