“Experience Ireland” Celebrates Irish Culture March 15 and 16 at MIM

Music, Dance, Storytelling, Pub Games and Irish-Inspired Food on Tap

PHOENIX (Feb. 18, 2014) − The Musical Instrument Museum (MIM) in Phoenix will celebrate Irish music, dance, crafts and storytelling during its “Experience Ireland” event St. Patrick’s Day weekend, March 15 and 16.

“Experience Ireland” is one of a series of cultural celebrations in MIM’s “Unity Through Diversity” partnership with Phoenix-based PetSmart®. The initiative brings the largest specialty pet retailer and the world’s only global musical instrument museum together to highlight musical traditions that celebrate cultural diversity while reinforcing music as a unifying element of humanity around the world.

“Irish culture holds an enduring place in American history and in the history of Phoenix,” said Celina Chiarello, public programs manager at MIM. “We are excited to showcase the many ways Irish culture has endured and flourished in the Valley.”

Dé Máirt Ceol, a Phoenix-based group of Irish musicians, will present a music session each day. In this informal, musical gathering, one musician starts a tune and the others join in.

The High Desert Harpers, a Celtic-harp ensemble also based in the Valley, will perform Irish airs, jigs, reels, hornpipes and ballads. Students of the Maguire Academy of Irish Dance will provide the dazzling footwork and lively energy that has made Irish dance widely popular.

Liz Warren and Sean Buvala of the South Mountain Community College Storytelling Institute will bring the art of Irish storytelling to MIM. They will share tales of saints and wonders, gods and heroes, otherworldly frights and fairy music – stories that have been told around the fireside for centuries.

Celtic-inspired face painting and a photo booth with costumes and props will add to the family fun.

Those who wish to participate in bringing Irish culture to life will be able to create and decorate their own bodhrán frame drum, and compete in a pub quiz at MIM’s Café Allegro. If all of this activity works up an appetite, Experience Ireland museum guests will be able to select from a delectable menu of items for purchase. The Café will offer Irish chicken and cream soup with potatoes and leeks; roasted Irish wild salmon marinated in Irish whiskey and honey; Irish stout-lamb stew with potatoes, carrots and parsley; and chocolate and orange Guinness cake.
