On October 15, the Greater Phoenix Chamber of Commerce (GPCC), one of MIM’s community partners, will honor three women in the Valley who have demonstrated leadership, community involvement, and mentorship at the 26th annual Athena Awards.
The GPCC presents the Athena Awards—named after the goddess of wisdom—in three main categories: private sector, public sector, and young professionals. This year, more than fifty Phoenix-area women were nominated, including Maureen O’Brien, MIM’s director of development. Established in 1982 by Martha Mertz at the Regional Chamber of Commerce in Lansing, Michigan, the Athena Awards movement has spread internationally.
Cherie Currie, lead singer of the Runaways, the internationally acclaimed all-girl teenage band of the mid-1970s, has just been added to the Women Who Rock concert series with a performance on November 30. On December 4, the Klezmatics return to MIM with their special brand of klezmer. Then, on December 10, the award-winning duo of Alasdair Fraser (Scottish fiddler) and Natalie Haas (Californian cellist) will display their dazzling rhythms and shared passion for the infectious melodies of Scottish/Celtic music. And on December 17 and 18, don’t miss the multiple GRAMMY-winning jazz and pop vocal ensemble Manhattan Transfer in their Holiday Show.
Tickets go on sale to Circle of Friends donors starting at noon, Tuesday, October 1, and to the general public at 10:00 a.m., Thursday, October 3. Purchase tickets online, in person at MIM, or by calling the MIM Ticket Office at 480.478.6000.
